Maybe I should have left a note, Marco thought.

But then Marco realized that he had not yet learned how to write.

In fact, as he moved through the dark walkways, he began to realize other things he had not yet learned how to do.

He had not learned how to count, let alone play dice or cards.

He had not learned how to read – that might come in handy.

Marco began listing the many things he had not yet learned how to do in his little chicken life.

But it was not util he had walked right onto a merchant’s ship and it had left the dock when he realized that he had not learned the most important thing of all…

how to get home.

Marco found himself a very long way from home!

You can see on the map below how far he walked while he was thinking about all the things he had not learned.

This drawing is a made up map (fictional) based on a real map of Venice, Italy.

You’ll find a real map of Venice, Italy below Marco’s map.  You can see all of the water canals that run through the historic city.
